INDIA (2016)

in the north - Delhi, Agra, Orchha, Pushkar

India. A place so diverse; a concept I can't quite grasp.

Having focused on the South Asia region as part of my Global Studies major, I knew disparity was a huge issue in India from the news and academic literature. But I didn't expect it to be so glaring, especially in the capital New Delhi.

Delhi is an organised chaos. The locals seem to be able to maneuver smoothly in the chaotic, crowded space, while we were often left confused and stranded on roadsides as we tried to figure our way forward.

Agra is beautiful, despite massive ongoing construction works to develop the area as a tourist hub.

Small town Orchha (with a population of 3,000) seems a lot more straightforward with buildings and attractions on just one main street, though the frequent power outages meant that we had to make do with candlelight and wet tissues to clean ourselves.

Pushkar is a holy town where locals walked around barefooted, where street cows roam freely, where no meat and eggs were served.

This album features snapshots from my 3-week backpacking trip.

In Pushkar. Legend has it that the more pigeons a place has, the more holy it is.

Taking selfies is such a strong culture amongst Indians that a new term "Selfitis" has been coined by experts to describe those with an obsession with taking and posting selfies.

Cows are considered sacred animals in Hinduism, and are allowed to roam freely on the streets.

The Congress Party logo (vandalism of palm on the wall behind) can be seen all around Orchha, a pro-Congress small town in Madhya Pradesh.
